Research & Clinical Interests
The primary research interest of my group is in the interplay of donor/recipient chimerism, immune reconstitution and viral infection following haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. We are currently working with teams across Europe on EU-funded projects in two of these areas: optimizing the assessment of donor chimerism (including examination of chimerism in different cell lineages) and PCR detection of Adenovirus infections (a) as a method of improving diagnosis and (b) for monitoring the efficiency of drug or cellular therapies. We are actively developing immunotherapy for CMV infection in conjunction with the National Blood Service at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. This work is performed in collaboration with Dr Russell Garland, Dr Paraskevi Diamante, Dr Allison Blair, Dr David Carrington and Dr Derwood Pamphilon. Funding agencies include The COGENT Trust, the European Union Fifth Framework Programme and the National Blood Service. Further details are given under:
Major clinical interests include Barth syndrome (X-linked cardiomyopathy and neutropaenia), osteopetrosis, Fanconi anaemia, haemaophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy. I am currently Medical Advisor to the Osteopetrosis Support Trust, Barth Syndrome Trust and CLIMB, and Chair of the UKCCSG Paediatric BMT Group.
