Chant Editing and Analysis Program

CEAP is computer software that supports transcription and analysis of Old Hispanic chant. This early medieval repertory is preserved in ca. 40 manuscripts, often notated, but without pitch content. The CEAP analytical tools rely on pattern matching and directionality rather than pitch, and make it possible to scrutinise melodic relationships between chants in the repertory.

CEAP is currently under construction. We are in the process of creating a font to represent the neumes for each manuscript; it is possible to transcribe most of the neumes contained in a handful of manuscripts at this stage. The analytical algorithms are also under development, but are already capable of indicating some relationships between chants.

For access to CEAP for transcription or analytical purposes, please contact a member of the project team.
