Setting an agenda for global radio history - Inaugural network meeting

19 April 2016, SS Great Britain

On a sunny April day in Bristol, at Brunel’s mighty ss Great Britain, a group of seven radio historians from across Europe and the United States came together for the first time to plan three years of events exploring the global history of radio. As well as thinking practically about issues such as the advance planning of workshops, research visits, publications and social media activities, we aimed to think creatively about the network and to share our research plans and findings.

The event featured the following presentations by each partner member, highlighting their recent research and particular areas and angles they would be keen to explore in relation to the work of the network.

  • Dr David Clayton - Technology, Propaganda and Radio Reception
  • Dr Friederike Kind-Kovács - Transnational Radio Surveillance in the Cold War: RFE/RL Across The Iron Curtain
  • Dr Vincent Kuitenbrouwer - 'Dutch International Communications Networks
  • Dr Simon Potter - Wireless and British Imperial Power
  • Dr Nelson Ribeiro - 'Portuguese International Broadcasting
  • Dr Rebecca Scales - The History of Listening in France and its Colonies
  • Dr Andrea Stanton, - Sound Studies and the History of Radio in Palestine
