Teaching and Administrative Responsibilities

Coordinator of the MA in Maritime Archaeology and History, and lecturer for postgraduate and undergraduate units on maritime archaeology.

Research Interests

Global seafaring since 1500; ship construction; shipyard archaeology; maritime landscapes; lake and canal water craft; North American Great Lakes; Hudson's Bay Company ; 17th & 18th Century Royal Navy; and historical archaeology.

Current Research Activities

Road Harbour Shipwreck Project (http://www.hmsnymph.com)
Underwater investigations of historic shipwrecks sunk at Tortola, British Virgin Islands. The project is also run as a summer field school, open to Bristol students and the public. Please visit the following web site for further information regarding the upcoming 2009 field project: Click Here.

York Factory Remote Sensing Project
Marine geophysical investigations within the subarctic waters of Hudson Bay; adjacent to historic York Factory, a Hudson's Bay Company fur trade post. Research focuses on location and documentation of three 17th Century shipwrecks, in addition to 300 years of submerged remains from the fort, harbour and nearby anchorages.

Shickluna Shipyard Project (http://www.greatlakesinstitute.ca)
Terrestrial investigations of a 19th Century shipyard, located in St. Catharines, Ontario. The site bears evidence to 80 years of shipbuilding history, with over 200 vessels launched from its slipways.
