Alumni recognised in Queen's birthday honours list

Following the announcement of the Queen’s birthday honours list, we're delighted to congratulate nine Bristol alumni who have been recognised for their outstanding achievements and service.


  • Dr Philip Campbell (BSc 1972, Hon DSc 2008), Editor in Chief of Nature, awarded for services to science.


  • Frances Cairncross CBE FRSE (Hon DSc 2004), Rector at Exeter College, University of Oxford, awarded for services to higher education and to economics.


  • Stephen Hoddell (MSc 1975), Former Chair of Samaritans UK and Ireland, awarded for services to civil society. 
  • Professor Jonathan Nicholl (BSc 1975), Dean for School for Health and Related Research at the University of Sheffield, awarded for services to health research.


  • Sally Jaeckle (Med 1997), Early Years Services Manager at Bristol City Council and Senior Adviser for South West National Strategies, awarded for services to early years education.


  • Amir Cheema (MEng 1991), Director for Transformational Outcomes Limited, awarded for services to young people through the scout movement.
  • Dr Wendy Ewart (PhD 1976), Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief of Strategy for the Medical Research Council, awarded for services to medical research.
  • Jennifer Griffiths (MEng 2009), Chief Executive Officer of Snap Fashion, awarded for services to digital innovation in the fashion industry.
  • Jacalyn Mathers (PG Dip 2009- ), Designated Nurse for Safeguarding Children at Bristol Clinical Commissioning Group, awarded for services to tackling female genital mutilation in Bristol.

  • one Knight/Dame Grand Cross (GBE)
  • three Medallists of the Order of the British Empire (BEM)
  • six Knights Commander (KBE)
  • 21 Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE)
  • 46 Knighthoods (Kt)
  • 150 Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)
  • 174 Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)
  • 208 Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)          

In addition, 35 alumni have received honours for their contribution to the civil or military service (the Order of the Bath):

  • four Knight Grand Cross (GCB)
  • two Knight Commanders (KCB)
  • 29 Companions (CB)
