Travels Beneath the Earth - Celebrating the UBSS Centenary

9 November 2019, 8.30 AM - 10 November 2019, 5.30 PM

Alumni are warmly invited to join the University of Bristol Spelaeological Society (UBSS) to celebrate 100 years of cave and archaeological exploration and research.

Reconnect with fellow alumni on campus for a weekend of presentations and field trips, celebrating one of the University's oldest societies.

Saturday's symposium, hosted at the School of Geographical Sciences, will see talks from University of Bristol academics and alumni on archaeology, history, exploration, speleogenesis and palaeoclimate research.

Professor Rick Schulting will give a keynote lecture, entitled: “The darker angels of our nature: a butchered prehistoric human bone assemblage from Charterhouse Warren, Somerset.” Professor Schulting’s talk is the first public presentation of the results from the latest work on this Early Bronze Age bone deposit, where the human bone shows unmistakable evidence of cannibalism.

For symposium attendees, there will also the opportunity to take part in a variety of field trips on Sunday 10 November in Bristol and on the Mendips, including a visit to Aveline’s Hole, Europe’s oldest cemetery, dating to the Early Mesolithic.

All alumni and their guests are welcome. The full programme of field trips and talks can be found online.

The society anticipates keen interest in the field trips and talks, in particular the keynote lecture. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, and places on the field trips are reserved for symposium attendees only.

Thanks to Linda Wilson (LLB 1982) and members of the UBSS Alumni Committee for kindly coordinating the weekend's celebrations.

Cost The symposium is free, although donations to running costs would be welcome.
