The Cambridge Branch of the University of Bristol Alumni is delighted to invite alumni and friends to their eighth Annual Dinner. This year, we will be hosted at the Principle's Lodge, the home of Dame Carol Black, Principal of Newnham College.

Dame Carol studied history and then medicine at Bristol and has an honorary degree from the University. She has been in post at Newnham since 2012 and we are most grateful to her for hosting us.

Newnham College was the second college for women in Cambridge, founded in 1871. At that time women could attend University lectures and take the exams, but it was not until 1948 that they were allowed to receive degrees. The college has many notable alumnae, such as Dorothy Hodgkin, the first woman Chancellor of Bristol, as well as Sylvia Plath, Joan Bakewell, Emma Thompson, Clare Balding, Mary Beard and Germaine Greer. Newnham is still a women-only college.

The evening will be hosted at Newnham Walk and will follow the usual format, with a wine reception at 7.00 pm, a three-course dinner at 7.30 pm and an after-dinner speech. This year we are delighted to welcome Bristol Professor David Cliff to tell us about exciting plans for a second campus at the University to be known as Temple Quarter.

It is an ideal time of year to visit Cambridge and we hope those from further afield will take the opportunity to spend the weekend here. Do join us for this special event.

Optional garden tour: For those who would like to learn about the college's 17-acre gardens, we have arranged a tour with the Head Gardener at 6.00 pm. There is no extra charge but we will take a collection for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust at the end of the tour. Places are limited to 25 on a first come, first served basis. To join us for this optional extra, please email Alison Wilson (Chair of the Cambridge Branch of the University of Bristol Alumni) at bristolcambridgealumnibranch@gmail.com. Please meet at the ornate Clough Gates at the end of Newnham Walk at 6.00 pm.
