Aims
- To work closely with Deans and the Pro Vice-Chancellors Resources and Education to plan the future size and shape of the student population, student number and student income targets, and to monitor achievement of those targets.
- To lead the development and implementation of University recruitment and admissions strategies which facilitate the recruitment of a diverse and able student population from the UK and overseas.
- To strive to create a positive educational experience for all University of Bristol students, in line with the Education Strategy, both through the services provided by the office and through our contribution to educational policy development.
- To facilitate effective University governance, academic development and internal communication by providing secretariat support for Senate and its committees.
- To monitor and contribute to regional, national and international priorities and developments in higher education and ensure that the University is well placed to respond and to maintain and enhance its strength as an institution.
- To take a lead in ensuring good communication between central University support services and the faculties
Objectives
- To annually review faculty and departmental student numbers targets and student tuition fee levels, to agree these with Deans and with Budget Committee and University Planning and Resources Committee, and to monitor and report on actual registrations and tuition fee income (1.1)
- To regularly review recruitment and admissions policies and procedures to ensure they enable the University to meet its student intake and financial targets, admissions principles and widening participation objectives, and to meet any external requirements such as from the Office of Fair Access (1.2).
- To provide professional leadership and co-ordination for University student recruitment activities and provide an effective and responsive admissions service (1.2).
- To develop, implement and review systems and services to support admissions; registration; unit choice; examination and assessment; and progression and completion informed by an awareness of national and international best practice (1.2 and 1.3).
- To maintain and enhance market, applicant and student data quality to support recruitment, admission and student processes; produce good quality management information; and enable the University to meet its student data reporting obligations to government and other bodies (1.2 and 1.3).
- To provide an effective student funding advice service for all students (1.3).
- To offer support and guidance for international students and staff and to advise the University on support needs for such students and staff (1.3).
- To co-ordinate student exchange, study abroad programmes and international work placements and encourage a wide range of our students to take the opportunity of studying outside the UK as well as encouraging students at international universities to spend some time studying at Bristol (1.2 and 1.3).
- To work with academic colleagues and the Education Support Unit to support the development of faculty teaching and assessment activities and quality assurance processes (1.3).
- To provide high quality information, advice and support for students and academic and administrative staff on matters for which the Academic Registry is responsible (1.3).
- With Deans and Faculty Managers, to ensure that Faculty Office structures are optimal to provide the best possible service to students and staff. Also to provide a primary contact point within the support services for the faculty offices (1.3).
- To provide proactive secretariat support and advice which enables Senate and its committees to operate effectively and make well-informed and transparent decisions (1.4).
- To facilitate the implementation of the decisions of Senate and its Committees, including clear communication to those affected and reflecting such decisions in University Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations where appropriate (1.4).
- To advise on University strategic international collaborations and to ensure that best use is made of the opportunities that these provide (1.5)
- To be represented at conferences and seminars and on national and international policy development bodies, as relevant, so that the University’s voice is heard in debate on wider higher education policy and practice (1.5).
- To contribute to the work of University committees and working groups, and provide information to inform the development of University policies, for example, in relation to international collaboration; the future size and shape of the student population; or in relation to external pressures, for example as a result of the Bologna agreement (all).
- To recruit excellent staff and develop staffing policies and procedures which encourage their personal and professional development and enable them to contribute fully and effectively to the work of the department (all).
