Teaching & Assessment data compilation

How the teaching and assessment data is compiled

This is calculated by creating a typical programme diet which is made up of the most popular 120 credit points of units taken by students on that programme for each year of the programme.  These are updated each year to reflect changes in student choice. Please see the flowchart (T&AFlowchart.doc (Office document, 46kB)how data is compiled for a visual representation.

Schools provide information at unit level about the learning, teaching and assessment activity using the following categories:

Learning & Teaching: - Scheduled, Independent, Placement

Assessment: - Written, Coursework, Practical

HEFCE/HESA have provided detailed guidance about using the learning, teaching and assessment categories.

This information is held in the unit & programme information database and is available for staff to check and update via the Unit & Programme Management System (UPMS). Guidance on how to enter the data in UPMS is provided both within the help sections in UPMS and as a document - Inputting Unit KIS Data (PDF, 695kB)

The unit data is fed directly from UPMS into the SITS KIS module which identifies the most popular units by student choice for each year of the programme. Using the unit data the SITS module calculates the percentages of time spent in the different learning and teaching activities and assessment activities for each year of the programme and for the programme overall.  The data is then published on individual prospectus course pages.
