Optional units

If you would like to develop your academic English language skills, our optional units can help. These units are suitable for Study Abroad students (on both general and specific pathways) only.

Each week, you will be required to:

  • attend a two-hour in-person session
  • complete tasks in your own time, using the materials provided.

Unit choices

Academic Listening and Speaking

This 10-credit unit will develop your academic listening and speaking, focussing on the skills you will need in the UK higher education context. You will learn to listen more effectively, finding the key information, dealing with confusion and managing interactions. You will learn to speak more persuasively, using intonation and structure to engage your audience.

Academic Reading and Writing

This 10-credit unit will develop your academic reading and writing, focussing on the skills you will need in the UK higher education context. You will learn to read more effectively, identifying appropriate texts and navigating them with efficiency. You will learn to write more persuasively, synthesising evidence, examples and opinion into an original piece.

Introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language

This is a 20-credit introductory unit in preliminary teaching skills, aimed at preparing students for entry into the profession of teaching English as a foreign language. It focuses on the central aspects of the teaching process and develops the students’ ability to handle the key components of the language system of English as well as the four skills.
