Generally, at most Universities student societies are administered by a Students' Union or Students' Guild. In order to start up a new society a Union usually requires a minimum number of members - its 30 in Bristol. If you don't currently have 30 people you can get signed up there are usually ways around this problem. Most Union's will provide you with a stall at Freshers' Fair (usually held at the beginning of the academic year), even if you're not an officially recognised society, to help you find more members.Having got enough members, you will need a constitution which will have to be approved by your Students' Union. You can download our constitution and a template constitution from our Sudents' Union as a guide. You will have to elect a committee to run the society - as a minimal set you usually need a president, a vice president, a treasurer and a secretary. Other positions can be created as they are needed or people become interested - for example in Bristol we have had a communications officer, a charity officer, an international student officer, a officer to develop links with other university chaplaincies and non-portfolio officers.
If you don't have a dedicated Chaplaincy building, then you'll probably meet at a local parish church. Probably the best way to start to build a regular, keen members is to organise a weekly social event after the Mass. In Bristol (where we are lucky to have a dedicated Chaplaincy building) we provide supper and have drinks in the Chaplaincy bar after the evening Mass.
Many other universities do the same thing - but quite a few also have a morning Mass followed by coffee. If you have an evening Mass, perhaps you could goto the pub for a few drinks, pubs with quizzes are also a lot of fun, a discussion on a particular relevant news topic, goto see a film (doesn't necessarily have to be religious in any way) etc. More event ideas can be found by looking at our website or websites of other university chaplaincies to see what they organise.
