Attire

If you do not own a keikogi (martial arts suit) then clean, loose and inexpensive clothing should be worn. If possible, avoid buttons, zips etc that can get caught. Tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt are ideal. Jeans and shorts are not suitable, as they restrict your movement and do not protect your knees.

Please ensure that you are punctual for all classes and that you always maintain a high level of personal hygiene. Footwear should be used between the changing room and the dojo, long hair should be tied back, and (where possible) finger and toe nails should be short. Jewellery should be removed or covered with a plaster. Once in the dojo, observe the etiquette used by senior students and follow their example.

Getting a gi

If you want to buy a gi, you can do so at ENSO Martial Arts.

They also have a website here, but you might do better to visit them where they will make sure you get the right size.

Etiquette

Basic rules of etiquette include respect for your instructor, your fellow students and yourself. There is an emphasis on "rei" - bowing - not as a religious act but as a non-verbal means of showing respect. It is also part of your own training as the practice of bowing contains some important aspects of Aikido training.

If you are new to aikido you should speak to an instructor or senior student for further basic etiquette.

Health and safety

Aikido as a martial art can be practised by people of all ages, strengths, and sizes. However, as with any other type of physical exercise, you may find aikido training to be physically demanding. Before practising aikido you must seek medical advice if you are aware of, or suspect that you suffer from, any illness, injury or condition that might affect your fitness for physical exercise. Furthermore, if you are in any doubt about your fitness during a class you must stop practising and seek the instructor's advice.

In compliance with the University of Bristol, Health and Safety regulations we have available our Risk Assessment Form which outlines the club's risk and control measures.
