Glasshouses

The glasshouses contain tender species from the four core collections displayed in four distinct climate zones: Tropical, Sub-Tropical, Warm Temperate and Cool Temperate.

Tropical

The Tropical section contains a large raised pool in which the giant water lily Victoria amazonica is grown - the first time that this plant has been cultivated in Bristol. Tropical elements of the Economic Plants Collection, such as sugar cane, coffee, cocoa, tea, rubber passion-fruits and various spice bushes are displayed in this section.

Sub-tropical

Epiphytic orchid

The sub-tropical section will contain many of the basal angiosperms that form part of the Evolution Collection, in particular Amborella trichopoda which was acquired from New Caledonia. Epiphytic orchids and bromeliads are housed in this section together with ferns, carnivorous plants, cycads, palms and clubmosses.



Warm temperate

Rarre plant from canary Isles

The warm temperate section contains parts of the Mediterranean Climate Regions collection, including part of the Garden's collection of Fynbos as well as plants from the Canary Islands and arid deserts.

Cool temperate

The cool temperate section contains most of the tender and half hardy plants from the Evolution Collection as well as providing a facility for overwintering plants fom the garden.
