Mark Horton MA, PhD (Cantab) FSA
Head of Department/Reader in Archaeology, University of Bristol. Director of the Centre for Historical and Maritime Archaeology

Mark works on the landscape archaeology of historical societies, in particular the Atlantic world, 1500-1900 AD. He has wide experience of African and Caribbean historical archaeology. He has previously directed projects in St Kitts, St Lucia, on the Darien colony in Panama, a survey of an eighteenth century plantation complex in Grand Cayman, in the Bay Islands, Honduras, and large scale excavations in Belize. He has also directed numerous archaeological projects in Africa and the UK. He has recently published books on the Swahili of East Africa, and on his research in Zanzibar (Oxford University Press 2001). He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA). Paul Belford BSc MA (Sheffield)
PhD Candidate, University of Bristol

Paul is a PhD Candidate in historical archaeology at the University of Bristol, and is Director of Ironbridge Archaeology. He is a Tutor for the MA in Historical Archaeology. His research interests include the archaeology of industrialisation and early European colonialism. He is a Member of the Council of the Society for Post Medieval Archaeology.
